Lawrence Shankland joined Hearts in 2022 but is now out of contract

Head coach Derek McInnes insists he is "not going to give up" on the prospect of Lawrence Shankland extending his stay with Heart of Midlothian.

The 29-year-old Scotland striker is out of contract with the Scottish Premiership club but has been in talks about a new deal.

The Edinburgh side are currently at a pre-season training camp in Spain, with last season's captain absent.

McInnes told HeartsTV there was "no update" on the situation.

"I'm leaving that up to the club to try and resolve," he said. "Personally, I'm not going to give up on it. While it's not a 'no', we have to keep that door open."

Shankland, who has 16 Scotland caps, joined Hearts from Belgian club Beerschot in 2022.

He scored 28 goals in 48 appearances in his first season with Hearts, 33 in 56 for club and country in his second campaign, but that rate fell to nine in 45 last term.

"While we still have a chance, we'll see where it takes us," McInnes added. "I've made it clear that Lawrence is a boy I want to work with.

"Across my career, I'm well used to not getting everything I want, but I'd love to have the opportunity for Lawrence to be with us this season.

"While we still have a chance, we'll hang on to that."
