SUNRISE, Fla. -- In his final game after nearly two decades in the NHL, Jonathan Quick made 14 saves in the New York Rangers' 3-2 loss to the Florida Panthers on Monday night.
The 40-year-old decorated goaltender from Milford, Connecticut, who backstopped the Los Angeles Kings to Stanley Cup championships in 2012 and 2014, and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP during the first of those two title runs, announced Monday morning that New York's game at Amerant Bank Arena would be his career finale.
The Panthers responded in kind, saluting him for several minutes after the game. Cole Reinhardt scored twice for the Panthers in the win, including the last goal Quick would allow in his career at the 18:10 mark of the third period. Neither team is headed to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"He earned the respect of his teammates, coaches and staff members through his work ethic and dedication to his craft," Rangers general manager Chris Drury said in a statement posted on social media earlier Monday. "Jonathan is a special person and player, and the entire Rangers organization wishes him -- along with his wife, Jackie, and three children, Madison, Carter and Cash -- all the best in retirement."
The No. 2 goaltender for the Rangers behind Igor Shesterkin, Quick was also the Team USA starter at the 2014 Olympics. He has a third Stanley Cup ring from 2023 as a backup for the Vegas Golden Knights, and will be remembered as one of the best goaltenders of his generation.
"Obviously, the past few years, very lucky to be part of this organization and wear this jersey, but tonight will be my last game in the league. You know, I'm looking forward to it. Very fortunate. Wife flew down with the kids. So, they'll be here in attendance tonight," Quick told reporters at morning skate. "My parents will be here. So, looking forward to this last one and try to get one more win here."
Quick played collegiately in Hockey East for UMass. His appearance in net Monday was his 921st in the NHL, including the postseason.
