Stars boost defense, get Myers from Canucks

The Dallas Stars boosted their back end in a big way, acquiring veteran defenseman Tyler Myers from Vancouver on Wednesday, the teams announced.

The Canucks receive a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL entry draft and a fourth-round pick in 2029, while also retaining half of Myers' remaining contract to reduce his cap hit for this season and next to $1.5 million.

Myers, 36, has one goal and eight points in 57 games for the struggling Canucks this season. He was held out of action earlier this week for roster management in anticipation of a potential incoming trade. Myers -- in the second season of a three-year pact carrying an average annual value of $3 million -- had a full no-movement clause in his contract, shifting to a 12-team no-trade list next season.

The 6-foot-8 defender will bring physicality and a stay-at-home presence to a Stars blue line that has needed an upgrade on the right side. He projects to slide into a third-pairing role for Dallas behind more offensive-minded skaters such as Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley. The Stars are second in the Western Conference and riding a 10-game winning streak.

Vancouver comes away from the deal with some significant draft capital that will help the retooling team continue to chart its next direction. The Canucks have hovered near the bottom of the league all season and are expected to continue selling in the coming days.

The NHL's trade deadline is 3 p.m. ET on Friday.
